Why Custom Shower Chair Cushions Are Different from Wheelchair Cushions

Wheelchair cushions and shower chair cushions may look similar, but they are designed for very different uses.

A wheelchair cushion is generally designed around extended sitting, positioning, comfort, and pressure distribution. A shower chair cushion must also accommodate bathing, toileting, personal hygiene, transfers, caregiver access, waterproof construction, and frequent exposure to water.

When a shower chair is also used as a commode chair, the size, shape, and position of the hygiene opening become especially important. Because every person’s needs are different, there is no single cushion design that works for everyone.

That is why every custom shower chair cushion we make at SolutionBased is individually made to order.

Choosing the Right Shower Commode Cushion Opening

The design of the hygiene opening can significantly affect how well a shower commode cushion works for the user or caregiver.

Some users prefer an open-front cushion for easier access during toileting and personal care. Others prefer a closed-front cushion with a center opening, which provides additional seating surface at the front. When a hygiene opening is not needed, the cushion can also be made with a fully closed seating surface.

The size and position of the opening can also be customized:

    •    A larger opening can provide greater access for toileting, bathing, and personal hygiene.

    •    A smaller opening can provide more seating surface and support.

    •    The opening can be moved farther forward or backward to better align with the user’s body, sitting position, shower chair, and toileting setup.

A larger opening is not always better, and neither is a smaller one. The correct configuration depends on the individual, how the chair will be used, and the access required by the user or caregiver.

Designed Around the Individual

Creating a custom shower chair cushion involves much more than measuring the width and depth of the seat.

We consider the type of shower chair, the user’s preferred sitting position, transfer method, hygiene needs, toileting setup, and the access required by the user or caregiver. We also consider how the cushion will attach to the chair and whether the chair will be used over a toilet, with a commode bucket, or only for bathing.

Even two people using the same shower chair may need completely different cushion configurations.

Our team can work directly with the user, caregiver, dealer, Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), occupational therapist, or physical therapist to help determine the most appropriate design.

Comfort and Support

Our custom shower chair cushions use a layered foam design. A firmer base foam provides support, while a softer viscoelastic foam layer creates a more comfortable seating surface.

Each cushion is built on a solid foundation and carefully shaped around the selected dimensions, opening, and shower chair configuration.

Waterproof Construction Is Essential

Unlike a wheelchair cushion, a shower chair cushion is regularly exposed to water and must be constructed to prevent water from reaching the foam and internal foundation.

Conventional stitching and standard upholstery methods are not sufficient for this application. Stitching creates needle holes and seams where water can penetrate the cushion. Once moisture reaches the interior, it can become trapped inside the foam and make the cushion more difficult to clean and maintain.

SolutionBased custom shower chair cushions are fully sealed, creating a watertight exterior around the foam and internal foundation. This specialized construction prevents water from entering the cushion while allowing the exterior surface to be cleaned after use.

The result is a waterproof shower chair cushion designed specifically for regular use in a wet bathroom environment.

Custom Replacement Cushions for Many Shower Chairs

SolutionBased can create custom replacement shower chair cushions for our own products as well as many other shower chair and shower commode chair models.

Whether the original cushion is worn, uncomfortable, or does not provide the right hygiene access, a replacement cushion can be customized to better fit both the chair and the person using it.

Depending on the chair and the user’s needs, we can customize:

    •    The cushion’s width, depth, and thickness

    •    The size and shape of the hygiene opening

    •    Open-front, closed-front, or fully closed configurations

    •    The forward or backward position of the opening

    •    The foam construction and overall cushion shape

    •    The attachment points needed to fit the shower chair

A shower chair cushion is not simply a wheelchair cushion used in the bathroom. It is a waterproof, specialized part of the bathing and toileting system—and it should be designed around the individual using it.
